Business digest: After making £500m from tax amnesties, HMRC is now taking no prisoners

LAST UPDATED AT 11:36 ON Fri 10 Jun 2011

HM Revenue and Customs has begun 16 criminal investigations following the closure of its tax amnesty, which collected an extra £500m in tax.

The Offshore Disclosure Facility and New Disclosure Opportunity led to 50,000 people voluntarily paying taxes they had been dodging under the promise of no prosecution. The Tax Health Plan, especially designed for medical professionals, yielded another 1,500 disclosures.

On top of the 16 criminal cases, HMRC is looking at 3,000 further leads as part of a wider crackdown on tax evaders.

Its next step is to pursue people holding overseas bank accounts, culminating in an online naming and shaming of anyone still avoiding them.
