Business digest: consumers dealt ‘body blow’ as utility puts up gas prices by a fifth

LAST UPDATED AT 10:48 ON Wed 8 Jun 2011

Consumers are braced for another round of energy price increases after Scottish Power announced rises of 10 per cent for electricity bills and 19 per cent for gas.

The price hike will affect 2.4m households and add around £175 a year to bills. The utility attributed the move to rising wholesale prices, government requirements and the cost of energy distribution.

But consumer watchdogs have called the increase a "body blow" for consumers. They warned that "suppliers like the comfort of the pack", and that other energy companies would probably follow suit. There was a similar series of rises last winter when the big six suppliers all increased their prices at once.

Scottish Power is among a number of energy companies under investigation by regulator Ofgem for "unfair pricing and misselling".
