America's richest now worth more than Russia's GDP
Bill Gates once again tops 'Forbes' list as US billionaires' total wealth reaches record high
BILL GATES has been named the richest American for the 20th year in a row as the collective wealth of the US super-rich hits an all-time high.
According to Forbes, the 400 wealthiest Americans are worth a record $2.02 trillion, up from $1.7tn in 2012 and slightly larger than Russia's GDP ($2.015tn).
This year the minimum net worth needed to make the list was $1.3 billion, meaning 61 American billionaires didn't earn enough to join the club. The last time the cutoff was so high was in 2008, just before the financial crash sent property and stock market values plummeting.
Gates topped the list with a fortune of $72bn. Earlier this year the Microsoft billionaire regained the title of world's richest individual from Mexican business magnate Carlos Slim. Warren Buffett, with a fortune of $58.5bn, is America's second richest, followed by Larry Ellison, co-founder and chief executive of Oracle Corporation, who is worth $41bn.
Mark Zuckerberg managed to edge back into the top 20 after dropping out last year. Facebook's recent success on the stock market meant his fortune rose by $9.6bn to $19bn.
The richest woman in America, and the world, is Christy Walton, heir to her husband's Walmart fortune. She came in sixth, with a net worth of $35.4bn.The only other woman in the top ten was Alice Walton, her sister-in-law.
America's richest politician was once again Michael Bloomberg, the mayor of New York, whose fortune was up $6bn from last year thanks to Bloomberg LP's strong performance in the past year. Bloomberg, in at number ten, still owns 88 per cent of the financial data firm he founded in 1982. ·
