Business digest: Underperformances by iPods and iPads fail to dent computer giant's revenues

Apple's profits for the first quarter of this year have nearly doubled compared to the same period last year, with a 95 per cent jump from $3bn to $5.99bn.

Net income and revenue increased by 85 per cent and 83 per cent respectively on the same period in 2010.

But whilst iPhone sales reached 18.65 million, a 113 per cent jump, the company only shifted 4.69 million iPads - lower than expected. Sales of the iPad were also poor, falling 17 per cent on last year's figures to only 9m.

Apple's chief executive Steve Jobs, who is on medical leave, said that Apple was "firing on all cylinders", adding that his company would "continue to innovate on all fronts throughout the remainder of the year".
