UK gambling websites win as result of US crackdown
Business digest: Shares soar after charges brought against three biggest US poker websites
UK online gaming companies are benefitting from a recent US government move to charge its three biggest poker websites with illegal gambling, money laundering and bank fraud.
Shares in several British companies have increased after the move was made against the creators of Full Tilt Poker, PokerStars and Absolute Poker. Bwin.party shares soared 30 per cent, 888 shares shot up 18 per cent, and Playtech's increased by eight per cent.
Whilst non-US players can still use the American websites, the number of visitors, crucial to create a range of levels for new players, has already dropped by 25 per cent at PokerStars and 48 per cent at Full Tilt.
The UK companies hope that this will increase their market share. Electronic gambling has been illegal in the US since 2006.
