Business digest: New report accuses search engine Baidu of helping sell counterfeit goods

The most visited website in China, Baidu, has been condemned by the US for directing users to third-party sites which sell fake and pirated goods.

In its latest report, the US Trade Representative (USTR) has accused the search engine of failing to protect intellectual rights and damaging businesses across the globe.

Ron Kirk, a member of USTR and President Obama's principle trade advisor, said that such practices "not only hurt American workers and businesses, but are threats to entrepreneurs and industries around the world".

The USTR is asking the American government to block foreign websites which allow illegal goods to be sold. As Baidu is heavily controlled by the Chinese government, this could be seen as a slight.
