Business digest: Sales for the Japanese motor company rose in 2010, despite recalls
Despite enduring a miserable 2010, Toyota remains the world's largest carmaker, and sold 8.42 million vehicles last year, just beating General Motors' total of 8.39 million.
Sales for the Japanese firm rose eight per cent in 2010 even though the company had to recall millions of vehicles and faced lawsuits and record fines.
Although it performed well in its home market of Japan, the company's share of the crucial American market fell and analysts predict that GM will reclaim the title of the world's biggest manufacturer - the title it held for 80 years until 2008 – in 2011 as Toyota attempts to rebuild its reputation in America and Europe.
