Business Digest: Third biggest supermarket chain defies weather to post 3.6 per cent increase
Following yesterday's strong figures from M&S, Sainsbury's claims to have enjoyed its "best ever" Christmas sales, despite enduring what it called "challenging weather conditions".
Like-for-like sales rose by 3.6 per cent in the final quarter from a year earlier, with non-food items experiencing the most growth.
"Our strategy of providing universal customer appeal through great food at fair prices has helped Sainsbury's to deliver its best ever Christmas," said the group's chief executive Justin King.
He added that Sainsbury's had become more competitive, increasing its market share to 16.6 per cent.
