Tycoon under fire for $65m bounty to 'turn' gay daughter
Gigi Chao advised to find a gay man and 'split the dosh' after father advertises for a suitable husband
THE HONG KONG billionaire who offered $65m to any man able to woo and marry his lesbian daughter has come under fire from all sides.
Cecil Chao Sze-tsung, a prominent business tycoon in Hong Kong, publicly promised the marriage bounty following reports that his daughter Gigi had married her long-term girlfriend, Sean Eav, in a ceremony in France earlier this year.
While homosexuality was decriminalised in Hong Kong in 1991, same-sex unions are not yet recognised.
Chao, a notorious playboy who claims to have had 10,000 girlfriends, insists his daughter is still single and needs a "good husband".
According to the South China Morning Post, his offer led to several speedy replies from potential suitors. It also brought many comments posted on the paper's website by readers critical of what they saw as Chao's "indecent proposal".
"How humiliating for this poor girl," wrote one reader. "Mr Chao needs to come out of denial and just be happy that he has such a beautiful daughter who appears to have found happiness with a partner whom she loves."
A reader on Global Post said: "Chao belongs to the last breed of people who do not understand what his daughter is undergoing... While I understand him, his solution to 'peddle' his daughter completely shows his lack of understanding to changes of the world today..."
Meanwhile, Julie Bindel in The Guardian suggests Gigi should "think of the dosh and go for it". Bindel says her first thought on reading the story was that Gigi could "collude with a gay male friend who would present himself to the father as a man that likes a challenge and offer to turn his daughter to the joys of beard rash".
"After a few Mills & Boon-like reluctant trysts," Bindel goes on, "Gigi would tearfully admit to her father that she had fallen for her handsome prince and they would split the dosh."
Staff at American gay magazine Instinct have come up with a similar plan. After reporting the story on their website, they wrote: "Gigi and Sean, if you're open to an old school yet fabulous lesbian couple/gay couple household for a few years, we're willing to present ourselves to your a-hole father and split the $65 million 75/25 or something (we can work out the details later)!"
Gigi herself is reported to have she found her father's plan "entertaining".
