School 'knew about teacher's affair with Megan Stammers'
Jeremy Forrest, 30, was spotted holding hands with 15-year-old Megan Stammers on a school trip
FRIENDS of missing teenager Megan Stammers claim they warned school staff about her relationship with a married teacher seven months ago.
Stammers, 15, is thought to have run away to France with her 30-year-old maths teacher Jeremy Forrest. They were last seen boarding a ferry from Dover to Calais on Thursday night in the teacher's black Ford Fiesta.
Friends of the school girl claimed yesterday that they had raised concerns with another teacher after seeing Stammers and Forrest hold hands on the way back from a school trip to Los Angeles in February.
A friend of Megan's at the Bishop Bell Church of England School in Eastbourne, East Sussex, told the Daily Mail that the teenager started seeing Forrest as early as January and was "really excited" about the relationship.
"They would always text each other," said the unnamed 15-year-old friend. "He would send her messages saying things like 'I miss you' and 'I can't wait to hug you'."
Forrest even wrote a song for the young girl – Better Company – which referred to the hand-holding incident. In it, he sings: "Sitting on the plane, we were miles away from the things you hate, but girl I'd do it all again, I'd hold your hand, put up with the friend, don't think that I won't."
Yesterday the schoolgirl's mother Danielle Wilson, 37, said she had been completely in the dark about the relationship. She revealed that Megan had been receiving after-school maths lessons from Forrest and broke down as she and Megan's stepfather appealed for the teenager to come home.
It also emerged that Forrest had been under investigation by the school and was expected to be suspended last Friday, the day after the pair vanished.
According to police, one of Megan's friends received a text message from her on Friday saying she had arrived safely in France - the last known contact with her.
A spokesman from East Sussex County Council admitted that the school had been aware of concerns about the teacher's relationship with Megan but refused to confirm when these were first raised.
