David Cameron has apologised to the families of the victims of the Hillsborough disaster after the publication of the report by the Hillsborough Independent Panel, which exposes the failings of the authorities and their attempts to cover them up after the tradegy in which 96 people died in a crush at an FA Cup semi-final in 1989.

The female leader of the Respect Party, Salma Yaqoob, resigned yesterday, blaming a "breakdown in trust" over Respect MP George Galloway's views on rape. Yaqoob described as "wrong and deeply disappointing" Galloway's claim, made in the light of accusations against Julian Assange, that consent was not needed every time before sex.

Archaeologists searching for Richard III's remains under a car park in Leicester said today they believe they have unearthed the king's skeleton. Richard Taylor, who led the dig, said the team had found a skeleton with spinal abnormalities who had suffered a trauma to the skull with a bladed weapon. Richard III, who is often depicted as a hunchback, died at the Battle of Bosworth.

A French investigating judge and a prosecutor will travel to Britain as part of the investigation into the murder of Saad al-Hilli, his wife and mother-in-law in the Alps, AFP reports. They will co-ordinate with police in the search for clues. Zainab al-Hilli, the older of two surviving daughters, was interviewed by police for the first time since emerging from a coma.

Crowds cheered at Heathrow as US Open champion Andy Murray arrived back on British soil. The tennis star has said he "will work hard" to set his sights on winning more to reach the world number one spot. Merchandisers estimated that 'brand Murray' would rise in value to at least £1m a year.
