Sir Norman Bettison, one of the senior police officers being investigated by the IPCC over the Hillsborough disaster cover-up, has resigned as chief constable of West Yorkshire Police. At the time of the disaster he was an inspector with South Yorkshire Police and was part of a liaison unit accused of spreading 'propoganda'.

Lawyers for the Boston Globe are to ask a judge today to unseal testimony given by Mitt Romney in a "messy" divorce case involving one of his major supporters, Staples co-founder Tom Stemberg and Stemberg's first wife, Maureen. Gossip site TMZ says the Globe was tipped off that the sealed documents contain "juicy information about Romney".

The Syrian government has agreed to a ceasefire over the Muslim festival of Eid, according to international peace envoy Lakhdar Brahimi. He said that some rebel groups that he had been able to contact had also agreed to the idea. It is not clear how long the ceasefire would last. Eid starts on Friday in Syria, but elsewhere in the Arab world, it begins on Thursday.
