Actor Nigel Havers is the surprise contestant to enter the jungle in ITV’s car crash reality show I’m a Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here and he has admitted his wife is so angry about it that she has left the country.

Havers, who rose to fame with his BAFTA-nominated portrayal of Lord Andrew Lindsay in the 1980s film Chariots of Fire and recently played a male escort in Coronation Street, said his wife Georgina was going to live in Africa for the duration of the show.

"My wife is furious I am doing it," said Havers. "She said 'I might not be back when you come out'.

"She did everything she could to dissuade me not to do it. She can't believe I am that stupid. She thinks actors are pretty stupid. We just don't talk about it.

"I’m a fool for agreeing to do any of this."

Havers claims in his ITV profile to be more interested in the "adventure" of living in the jungle, but he will have to endure the company of a motley crew of D-list celebrities, washed-up politicians, retired sports stars and a Playboy pin-up who might well have other motives.

They are: TV presenter Gillian McKeith, athlete Linford Christie, former Bond girl Britt Ekland, Happy Mondays singer Shaun Ryder, former X Factor contestant Stacey Solomon, former Lib Dem MP Lembit Opik, Playboy model Kayla Collins, former footballer’s wife Sheryl Gascoigne and unknown rapper Aggro Santos.

The new series, complete with its notorious ‘bushtucker trials’ in which the celebrities have to complete such challenges as eating kangaroo testicles or lying in a bath of snakes, starts this Sunday on ITV. ·
