Winkleman’s Film 2010 debut brings Mail U-turn

Claudia Winkleman and Jonathan Ross

‘Bring back Jonathan Ross’ say the architects of his destruction

Claudia Winkleman's debut as the new presenter of Film 2010 has received a mixed reaction from fans of the show, with some viewers calling for Jonathan Ross to make a swift return.

Winkleman presented the opening night of the revamped show, using expert guests and live interviews rather than Ross's trademark pre-recorded straight-to-camera commentary.

But things didn't always go according to plan, with an interview with Keira Knightley, Carey Mulligan and Andrew Garfield at the opening of the London Film Festival descending into incoherent giggles.

Apparently, this was just too much for some regulars. One wrote on Twitter: "I've only been watching Film 2010 for 10 minutes and already I can tell that Winkleman has turned a once prestigious show into Newsround."

Another tweet said: "Watching Film 2010 and claudia winkie is just awful - poor commentary, bullish and actually quite irritating."

Oddly, the newspaper that has delighted in reporting these observations today under the headline 'Bring back Jonathan Ross!' is the Daily Mail – the very paper that was instrumental in pushing Ross out of the BBC.

As reported on The First Post at the time of Sachsgate - two years ago only two listeners complained to the BBC about Ross and his frioend Russell Brand leaving lewd messages on actor Andrew Sachs's answer-machine during Brand's Radio 2 show.

It was the Mail that reported on their prank calls and prompted an avalanche of complaints – many from readers who had never heard the show. Barely a day went past without a Mail columnist demanding Ross’s head.

The rest, as they say, is history, with Brand resigning immediately and Ross finally quitting the BBC earlier this year. ·
