It was at last year's MTV awards that Kanye West made it plain he didn't agree with the decision to award teenage star Taylor Swift the prize for Best Female Video instead of Beyonce. Jumping up on stage as Swift received her award, the 33-year-old West shouted to the stunned audience: "I'm sorry, but Beyonce had one of the best videos of all time."

He was later roundly criticised for his boorish behaviour with even President Barack Obama reported to have called West a "jackass". Twelve months on and West is still overwhelmed by pity for his actions, though his remorse appears to be more for himself than for the sweetheart of pop and country music.

On Saturday he whined to the world in one Twitter post that "I bled hard ... cancelled tour with the number one pop star in the world ... closed the doors of my clothing office." The number one pop star in question, Lady Gaga, allegedly pulled the plug on the tour because of poor ticket sales in the wake of West's comments.

Later West tweeted: "I'm the guy who at one point could perform the Justin Timberlake on stage and everyone would be sooo happy that I was there." And just in case his diminishing fan base still doubted his grief, West added that: "People tweeted that they wish I was dead ... No listen. They wanted me to die people. I carry that. I smile and take pictures through that."

While acknowledging that he had "ego" issues, West said he now had his arrogance in check and to prove it he has written a song for Swift by way of atonement. "If she won't take it then I will perform it for her," he tweeted, a statement that could be interpreted as either a promise or a threat. ·
