The verdict on Chiles and Bleakley’s Daybreak

Christine Bleakley and Adrian Chiles

The early reviews of ITV’s Daybreak have been as predictable as the show itself

Former BBC presenters Christine Bleakley and Adrian Chiles were reunited this morning on the dark purple sofas of Daybreak, ITV's new weekly morning slot, which has replaced the long-running GMTV.

The broadcaster hopes that the magazine-style morning news show - plus Chiles and Bleakley's much-reported-on "chemistry" - can kick-start its flagging morning ratings. This week's guest stars include Tony Blair - who gave his first live UK interview to promote his new memoirs - and Prince Charles, who will visit the Daybreak set on Friday.

WHAT THEY'RE SAYING:Hadley Freeman, the Guardian: "Just in case the pairing of a galumphing older man and an attractive-but-pancaked-in-makeup woman wasn't clichéd enough... Chiles bullishly creaks out the comedy – and by "comedy" I mean saying things like "I'm going to walk across the studio in 11 steps. Bleakley's role, on the other hand, is to laugh tinklingly at Chiles's jokes."

Orkney Library, Twitter: "Adrian Chiles in morning: less welcome than the woman who asked to look through our entire Danielle Steel collection at 4.59pm on Saturday."Neil Wilkes, Digital Spy liveblog: "It's all very cynical so far. The next two items on the news agenda are 'is Wayne Rooney going mental?' and 'did David Cameron's head of communications know about the hacking at News of the World? ... Kate, whose inappropriate outfit draws attention to her breasts, accuses Chiles of being "sarky" for asking whether she enjoys the showbiz news."

Andrew Pettie, the Telegraph: "Aside from its new hosts, Adrian Chiles and Christine Bleakley, and a smart new mauve studio, this could have been any old edition of any other breakfast show. Daybreak's producers had promised that it would help set the day's news agenda for its viewers. For most of the show, however, the news items were flabby and lacklustre."

Stuart Hermitage, the Guardian liveblog: "Although it does seem like a continuation of GMTV rather than a bold reinvention, some of the new aspects of Daybreak have worked. Adrian and Christine have done reasonably well and the other new faces all seem like good additions."

Andrea McGrath, the Daily Mail: "Relaxed and at ease, Bleakey lounged at one point on the sofa and didn't seem to struggle with the early call time, while Chiles was clearly attempting to heed his new bosses' instructions to to 'look as though he is enjoying himself on the programme'. Bleakley's much talked about tan has been toned down for a more natural looking skin tone. She looked elegant in an above-the-knee taupe dress and nude heels."

Jason Manford, Chiles's replacement on the BBC's The One Show, on Twitter: "I think Adrian & Christine are doing great, the most watchable pair on TV. After Holly Willoughby." ·

absolute rubbish.Very boring presenters, its enough to put anyone back to sleep.Thank goodness Im back to work on monday

Daybreak - It is really terrible, Adrian is a cardboard cut out and needs a major make over. It is as exciting as watching paint dry.

Why change things that worked well previously?

The budgets at ITV have obviously been cut drastically to deliver this low standard of entertainment???

My opinions of the recent changes in presenters?
Daybreak - Compered by Misery Guts and Meaningless Nonentity!
The One Show - Compered by Humourless Smallfry and Welsh Lightweight!
None of the four of them worthy of the shows they're in - just like Wooden Mediocrities Holmes and Langford, who ruin "This Morning" whenever they're on!
