Tattoo actress too soft, says Larsson translator
‘I am nervous about the Hollywood film version’ says man who helped create worldwide bestseller
The man who translated the Stieg Larsson thrillers from Swedish into English says Rooney Mara, the Hollywood actress chosen to play the punk, bisexual computer hacker Lisbeth Salander, is "a bit soft" for the role.
"She doesn't look anything like the picture I had of her in my head," said the American writer Steve Murray, whose translations helped The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo and the two follow-up novels become worldwide bestsellers.
"She needs to do some working out if she's going to play the part. She is just not buff enough at the moment. I must say I am disappointed."
As The First Post reported last week, Mara was chosen by director David Fincher over Carey Mulligan, Scarlett Johansson, Ellen Page and countless other hopefuls for the part.
As anyone who has read the bestselling Larsson trilogy or seen the Swedish film versions - The Girl Who Played With Fire opens at British cinemas this week - the role is a gift for the right actress.
In the Swedish films, Salander is played to critical acclaim by Noomi Rapace. It is understood she was never considered for the US remakes.
"I am nervous about the Hollywood version," said 66-year-old Murray. ·

Trust the Americans. Why remake it? Nothing foreign has any merit for them. It's a surprise they haven't repainted the Mona Lisa or made arms for the Venus de Milo. America has no class.
