Brangelina win damages against News of the World
Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt accept undisclosed sum after tabloid wrongly claimed actors were separating
The Hollywood couple Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt that accepted an undisclosed sum after suing the News of the World over its claims that they were separating.
Pitt and Jolie were not at the High Court in London to hear the ruling against the tabloid newspaper, which claimed in January that the actors planned to split after six years.
The News of the World reported that the couple, who met on the set of Mr & Mrs Smith when he was still married to Friends actress Jennifer Aniston, had agreed on custody of their six children as well as the division of their assets, estimated by the tabloid to be $310 million.
The front-page story was published on January 24 under the headline 'Pitts all over'. The article also claimed that the separation would occur imminently, and alleged that the couple's children would live with Jolie but that Pitt would have visitation rights.
The actors, seen earlier this week looking very much the Hollywood couple at Jolie’s Salt premiere, said the claims were false and demanded a retraction of the story as well as an apology. Their lawyer Keith Schilling told the High Court that News Group Newspapers, which publishes the News of the World, now accepted that each of the allegations was "false as well as intrusive."
The News of the World has agreed to publish an apology and pay the couple costs and damages, which they intend to donate to their charity the Jolie-Pitt Foundation. ·
