Johnny Depp ‘to star in Doctor Who movie’
Rumour gathers pace that Timelord is to regenerate into Johnny Depp
As British TV fans debate whether Doctor Who's newest Time Lord Matt Smith is as good as his predecessor David Tennant, Johnny Depp is apparently being tipped to play the Doctor in a big-screen version of the long-running TV show.
Russell T Davies, the writer and producer who revived the sci-fi show in 2005, is now living in America where he is working on a fourth series of the Doctor Who spin-off, Torchwood. But according to reports, Davies is also said to be working on a script for a Doctor Who movie, slated for release in 2012. The same sources also claim that Depp has been confirmed to play the Time Lord.
Earlier this week a story appeared on PubArticles.com, an article submission site, which claimed that both Davies and Depp had confirmed the rumour. Davies was quoted as saying: "Bringing the Who franchise to the theatres is a regeneration for the character beyond the usual one." Depp, meanwhile, reportedly described the Doctor as a "mysterious demi-god".
Somewhat suspiciously, PubArticles pulled the article although it has since reappeared. The sci-fi site Tor.com picked up the story and claimed to have confirmed Depp's casting with "movie studio sources".
Other fan sites have poured scorn on the story, however, claiming it is just a spurious internet rumour. As Den of Geek said: "Stranger things have happened, to be fair. But not this strange, surely?"
Someone whose name has not been linked to the project is film director and Depp's long-time collaborator Tim Burton. Should he be spotted near a Tardis anytime soon, the story may just about have a ring of truth about it. ·

i really hope this isn't true, as much as i like mr depp. i think, like a lot of fans, that the film should feature matt smith AND david tennant coming together and being drawn back into the last great time war and encountering paul mcgann - where we finally get to see the eighth doctor's regeneration into christopher eccleston. i think it could be spectacular were they to do this.
I am a fan of Johnny Depp and Doctor Who. I think if there is going to be a doctor who movie, bring David Tennant back, dont change his character at all, people love him as the doctor!!!!!
