Supermodels Kate Moss and Naomi Campbell were among the biggest names in British fashion to attend today's private funeral service for designer Alexander McQueen.

Held the day after London Fashion Week drew to a close, the 40-minute ceremony at St Paul's Church in Knightsbridge was an intimate gathering of McQueen's family and closest friends. His father Ronald and five older siblings were joined by designer Stella McCartney, fashion writer Daphne Guinness and film director Sam Taylor-Wood.

It is thought that a larger memorial service will be held later this year for McQueen, who was found hanged at his Mayfair flat two weeks ago. The 40-year-old designer was known from comments left on his Twitter page to have been distressed by the death of his mother Joyce the previous week. He killed himself on the eve of her funeral.

McQueen, a four-time winner of the British Designer of the Year award, was due to unveil his latest collection in Paris next month. A spokesman for the Alexander McQueen label said today that the show will still go ahead. "We are focusing right now on the Paris show, which takes place on March 9." ·
