Gerard Depardieu beats up car outside swingers’ club
The French actor has admitted the assault but could offer police no explanation
The French actor Gerard Depardieu has been reported to Paris police for smashing up a parked car while he was walking home to his Left Bank townhouse on Sunday night. It seems the the actor was strolling along when he suddenly blew a fuse and took it out on the car.
He kicked in two doors and smashed the windscreen before calmly walking away, according to eyewitnesses, as if nothing had happened.
The car was parked outside a club echangiste or swingers' club in the St Germain-des-Pres quarter of Paris, an area known for its restaurants and nightlife. The owner of the car did not immediately report the incident but has since done so.
Depardieu has apparently admitted attacking the car but was unable to offer police any explanation as to why he did it. He has been ordered to report to the 6th arrondissement police station after Christmas to explain himself.
One of a handful of French actors known to worldwide audiences, his famous films include Jean de Florette, Green Card and Cyrano de Bergerac. More recently, he has played Obelix in three Asterix movies.
In France, he is well known not just as the star of well over 100 movies, but as a winemaker of some repute. His northern Rhone wine, Lys de Volan Condrieu, is frequently well reviewed by wine writers.
But he also has a reputation for getting into trouble - one that hasn't dimmed as he approaches his 61st birthday next Sunday.
