Cruz and Minnelli add sparkle to SATC
Stars both have cameos in the new Sex and the City film, currently being shot in Manhattan
The sequel to last year's highly successful Sex and the City film, currently being shot on location in Manhattan, has two sparking additions to its cast: the Oscar-winning actresses Penelope Cruz and Liza Minnelli have joined in cameo roles.
Thirty-six years divide the two Oscars they won. Minnelli's best actress award was for her performance as Sally Bowles in the 1972 film Cabaret while Cruz's best supporting actor statuette came in 2008 for Woody Allen's Vicky Cristina Barcelona.
Cruz, dressed in a backless black dress, was spotted at the Empire Hotel shooting a scene with Chris Noth, who plays Mr Big. Despite initial chatter that she was playing herself in the film, it now seems she is appearing as a banker.
Minnelli is playing herself. According to reports from the set, when she wrapped after her three-day shoot she gave a spontaneous rendition of Every Time I Say Goodbye for the cast and crew.
"A total hush fell over the set. You could have heard a pin drop, it was such a moving moment," said an observer. "Everyone had goose bumps, tears. It was a really lovely parting gift she felt like giving everyone."
Cruz, 35, is in New York with her Spanish actor boyfriend Javier Bardem. She attended the US premiere of her Pedro Almodovar film Broken Embraces at the closing night of the New York Film Festival on Sunday. When reporters spotted a fabulous sapphire on her ring finger, she refused as always to say whether she and Bardem were finally tying the knot.
