Bride Wars

Frothy frolic starring Anne Hathaway and Kate Hudson as best friends who find their weddings are accidentally scheduled for the same day

There's nothing terribly sophisticated about Bride Wars. It's a frothy, flouncy frolic starring Anne Hathaway and Kate Hudson as best friends who for years have dreamed of perfect June weddings at the New York Plaza Hotel but who now, due to some gross, uncorrectable error, find themselves getting wed on precisely the same day.

Naturally their friendship curdles into something rather unpleasant, and soon each bride is devising evermore devilish plots to undo her rival and make sure she has the best wedding (think horrendous fake-tanning accidents, pregnancy rumours, ruthless maids of honour - all the usual claws-out techniques).

The script is perhaps in need of a little more zing, and while Hudson is at her cold, fierce best as ruthless attorney Liv, it would be really nice to see Hathaway - sweet and winning as she is - more regularly cast as someone other than a soppy, doe-eyed heroine.

All that aside, Bride Wars makes for that breed of lightly-whipped cinema one occasionally needs. ·
