Madonna has a keen interest in technology and the situation in Libya, according to Australian actress Abbie Cornish, who offers us this window into the pop star-turned director’s soul in the course of an interview to promote her latest film, W.E.

Cornish, who plays an American woman obsessed with King Edward VIII and Mrs Simpson, the woman for whom he abdicated in 1936, told the Mail on Sunday that Madonna, who directs W.E, is "one of the smartest women I’ve come across".

"You need to be totally switched on to the news and current affairs to talk to her – she asks you questions all the time and expects you to be up on everything that’s going on, from Libya to the latest advances in technology. Her mind never stops working."

Cornish admits that the pair, who would enjoy a Cosmopolitan cocktail after a hard day's shooting, also talked about shoes – and not all their conversations were serious. "[Madonna's] very funny," says Cornish. "She tells a lot of good jokes. She is one of the coolest women on the planet." ·
