Rudo Y Cursi
Gael Garcia Bernal and Diego Luna are brothers whose rivalry intensifies when they are picked up by big football teams in Mexico City
Gael Garcia Bernal and Diego Luna, the two young Mexican stars of Y Tu Mama Tambien, reunite for this tale of Beto and Tato, two brothers from a small village who work on a banana plantation and play as goalkeeper and striker for the local football team. When both are scouted to bigger clubs, their sibling rivalry intensifies.
Kevin Maher, the Times: The audience-pleasing hook is that the movie is not just a satirical morality tale but a robust fish-out-of-water comedy. Yes, it depicts the morally deleterious effects of sudden wealth and decadent living on Beto and Tato, now called by their soccer superstar names, Rudo and Cursi (literal translation Rough and Vulgar). But it does so with wickedly funny intent. Bernal's Cursi is transformed into a vainglorious Beckham/Ronaldo hybrid, complete with twig-thin trophy girlfriend (Jessica Mas) and a yellow Hummer. (Verdict: four stars out of five)
Nigel Andrews, Financial Times: For his first film as director, Carlos Cuarón, brother of Alfonso Cuarón, who made Y Tu Mamá También, has been to the ingredients shop. He has bought a pound of scoundrelly charm, an ounce of wit and a ton of Mexican local colour. This includes glimpses of noisy family life, slumdog views of Mexico City and a charlatan wheeler-dealer who turns out to have a golden heart. Yet Rudo Y Cursi has enough vitality to transcend its air of formula. (Verdict: three stars out of five) ·
