Religulous
Comedian Bill Maher looks at religion and its follies
Starring comedian Bill Maher, Religulous is a documentary of the Michael Moore mould about the follies of religion. Among other targets, Maher travels to a Creationist Museum in Kentucky, where he learns that man lived alongside dinosaur 5,000 years ago, to Holy Land, a theme park in Florida, and meets a rabbi who's in league with Holocaust deniers. Made by the director of Borat.
WHAT THEY ARE SAYING:Peter Bradshaw, the Guardian: The acid test is whether you are prepared to hammer Islam. Maher passes, sort of. Though he never attacks any religion as fiercely as Christianity, he challenges a Muslim rapper to admit that Rushdie's death sentence was wrong. Maher's film only really catches fire, however, with his final monologue, condemning religion for being an "enabler" of violence, like a mafia wife. This should have been his starting point. (Verdict: two stars out of five)
Helen O'Hara, Empire: Maher is an extremely intelligent man, who's done his research before heading out on the road - but his debate opponents are, for the most part, not too bright... it would be nice to see him arguing it with a really well-educated Jesuit or other theologian... Maher falls short of the film he could and perhaps should have made, but this is, in large part, as stirring a call to action for atheism as An Inconvenient Truth was to environmentalism. And also, really funny. (Verdict: four stars out of five)Nigel Andrews, Financial Times: Like a jesting Richard Dawkins, Maher goes about the world confronting assorted believers and trying to make them admit their folly. I counted two knockdowns, one submission, one walkout (a huffy US southerner the size of a blimp) and several dead ties. Some fights are suspiciously unfinished, reminding us that Maher and director Larry Charles (Borat ) had right of final cut. (Verdict: three stars out of five) ·
