Mr Demi Moore gets the raspberry from the Oscar- alternative awards

Ashton Kutcher, an actor who has made a career from walking the fine line between public adoration and revulsion, has scooped the 'Worst Actor' award at the Razzies, the satirical anti-awards which bemoan the worst of Hollywood.

Kutcher secured the wooden spoon for his romantic lead in Valentine's Day. His co-star, Jessica Alba, was similarly honoured with a 'Worst Actress' gong.

Neither actor showed up at the awards ceremony, held yesterday in LA ahead of tonight's Oscar ceremony – but then, few winners do. Sandra Bullock collected her 'Worst Actress' gong in person last year, showing remarkable good humour – but she had the consolation of an Oscar nomination (for a different movie) to help her laugh it off.

There's no such luck for Kutcher: none of his bare-chested, lightweight romantic roles has yet caught the eye of the Academy. His latest vehicle, No Strings Attached, seems likely to continue that trend – but it does feature Oscar nominee Natalie Portman.

Portman will find out this evening if her turn as a neurotic, self-harming ballerina in Darren Aronofsky's Black Swan was good enough to earn her the Best Actress award. If she does win, Kutcher says he wants a mention.

"I just hope she thanks me at the Oscars," he told handbag.com. "What have [Darren Aronofsky or Portman's parents] done? You know what I mean? What have they done?"

Poor old Ashton, left behind by his co-stars. His only consolations will be his multi-million-dollar media empire (he produces MTV Punk'd and reality show Beauty and the Geek), his beautiful wife Demi Moore and his undeniable good looks.

Perhaps this conspicuous success – and an understandable trace of smugness about it – is the reason Kutcher seems to irritate so many people so much. There is even a Facebook group for "Everyone Who Just Hates Ashton Kutcher".

At least those nice people at the Razzie awards appreciate him. ·
