Maria Bello to star in Prime Suspect NY
ER actress takes on Helen Mirren’s iconic role for NBC’s American pilot
It’s the role that made Helen Mirren a household name on both sides of the Atlantic - DCI Jane Tennison in Prime Suspect. Now America is to get its own version, set in New York and starring ER actress Maria Bello.
According to Entertainment Weekly, the deal is signed to start filming the pilot episode for NBC in the autumn, with Friday Night Lights director Peter Berg behind the camera and Desperate Housewives producer Alexandra Cunningham as script writer and executive producer.
The US version ditches Scotland Yard to follow a hard-bitten female detective in a tough New York precinct which is dominated by men.
Bello, who made her name as Dr Anna Del Amico in one season of the hit medical drama ER, said she was "definitely nervous" to play Mirren’s signature role, "I mean, c’mon! How could anyone compete with her? Didn’t she do about 10 of them and win an Emmy every time?"
Mirren did, in fact, win two Emmy awards from six nominations during the run of Prime Suspect, which spanned 14 years and ended in 2007.
And if if those aren’t some unnervingly big shoes to fill, Bello has another problem – she has just broken her tailbone during a snowboarding accident. "They [the doctors] said it takes six months to heal, maybe,” she said. “It's hard to sit down."
