Gervais gets the laughs, Depp gets the palazzo
Johnny Depp buys palazzo in Venice after his turn in The Tourist
It seems Johnny Depp has got the last laugh following Ricky Gervais's cheeky dig at his role opposite Angelina Jolie in last year's poorly reviewed adventure flick, The Tourist.
"Toy Story, Despicable Me, Tron," said Gervais in his introduction.
"It seems like everything this year was three-dimensional, except the characters in The Tourist."
It turns out that Depp - who, unlike some Hollywood stars, took the Gervais routine smiling - had such a good time filming in Venice that he decided to buy a house there.
The 17th century Palazzo Dona Sangiantoffetti overlooking the Grand Canal is said to have set him back more than $10m. According to La Nuova Venezia, the Hollywood star outbid an Arab prince to get it.
There's just one snag - it's not quite big enough for Depp, his wife Vanessa Paradis and their two children, and the actor wants to be sure an adjoining building is available to expand into.
Presenting the Golden Globes might be good for Gervais's profile, but nothing beats being a Hollywood star when you want to flash the cash. ·

I love Depp's acting and, generally, choice of movies but I really don't understand why the British press is so hell-bent on hitting on Gervais. His Golden Globes speech was funny. Look at what's going outside of Hollywood to be really shocked. And I don't see how Depp buying a palazzo has anything to do with Gervais, who must not want himself.
