Brad Pitt in talks to film Chilean miners’ story
Plan B production company may even cast some of the miners as themselves
Brad Pitt wants to make the story of the Chilean miners into a film. His production company, Plan B, is in talks with a lawyer representing the 33 men rescued from the San Jose mine last month.
Santiago's El Mercurio newspaper reports that Plan B, which is responsible for Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Kick Ass and Eat, Pray, Love, is offering "several million dollars" for the rights to the miners' story, which culminated in an ingenious rescue operation watched by millions of people across the world. Apparently some of the miners are being offered roles in the film.
Negotiations are being held up because the miners first want to set up a holding company to manage money made from offers relating to their exploits. The miners' lawyer, Edgardo Reinoso, says that he is receiving an average of 10 business proposals daily, ranging from invitations to appear on TV shows to book deals.
But even without this delay, Plan B looks likely to be beaten in the race to bring the story of 'Los 33' to the big screen. A rival film, The 33 of San Jose, started filming just five days after the Chilean miners were rescued, as in the actual event, features a cast of 32 Chileans and a Bolivian.
The film's producers are reportedly talking to four distributors in the UK. ·
