‘Cockney’ Katy Perry makes an arse of herself as Pippa

Singer hosts Saturday Night Live, but her East End accent is even worse than husband Russell Brand's

RUSSELL BRAND is often accused of being a 'mockney' but at least he makes a better fist of the accent than his wife Katy Perry managed when she played Pippa Middleton as an East Ender on the US comedy show Saturday Night Live this weekend.

The pop singer was given the onorous task of playing a gangster version of Pippa, who steps in to defend her sister Kate from an attack by the Queen and Duke of Edinburgh, and gave it her best shot.

However, she would have struggled to get a part in a Guy Ritchie film as her accent veered from EastEnders to Coronation Street and at one point even started flirting with Neighbours.

Unsurprisingly the sketch contained ample reference to Pippa's famous behind. At one point Perry, who is better known for her cleavage, presented her backside to the audience and announced: "Geezers, line up to look at my arse."

Her accent was not the only controversial aspect of the sketch, in which the royals demand to know why Prince William's wife has failed to deliver an heir to the throne.

The Daily Mail reports that "Katy Perry and her Saturday Night Live cohorts delivered a barrage of insults aimed at the British Royal family". One angry reader commented that Fred Armisen, who played the Queen, looked more like Mick Jagger than the monarch.

Bizarrely the sketch ends with the royals performing the kind of ska number that was briefly popular in Britain in the early 1980s.

During her stint as SNL host, Perry turned her attention to another Briton - and did a rather better job of taking off Florence Welch from Florence and the Machine. ·
