Worrall Thompson not the only star with sticky fingers
As chef apologises for pocketing cheese and wine, who else has been shoplifting?
TELEVISION chef Antony Worrall Thompson has made a public apology after being caught shoplifting cheese and wine from Tesco five times in the space of two weeks. The star of Ready Steady Cook was cautioned after a secret camera in the store filmed him failing to scan the barcodes of items at the self-service checkout machines. He is not the first celebrity with sticky fingers…
Winona Ryder
The actress made headlines in 2002 after claiming she took £3,000 worth of clothing from a Beverly Hills store to prepare for a film role. Her story didn't wash with the court, which found her guilty of grand theft and vandalism. She was sentenced to three years' probation with 480 hours of community service. Rumours of Winona Ryder's kleptomania were reawakened in 2008 when the Edward Scissorhands and Girl, Interrupted star allegedly left a Hollywood store without paying for make-up found in her bag.
Peaches Geldof
Bob Geldof's socialite daughter also appears to be a fan of the five-finger discount. The 22-year-old has been accused of shoplifting clothes and accessories four times in the last four years. Most recently, she was accused of pocketing around £70 of make-up from Boots in Regent Street, London. Geldof was allegedly spotted by a store detective stealing mascara, foundation and eyeliner as she strolled around the branch last October. Staff reportedly did not call the police but have banned her from the store.
Richard Madeley
The wilder half of Britain's daytime TV couple Richard and Judy was charged with shoplifting from Tesco in 1994. Richard Madeley insisted he paid for his shopping but accidentally left champagne in his trolley. He was cleared in the crown court but said the publicity was mortifying. "If I'd been accused of robbing a bank, at least it's got a bit of glamour to it," he said afterwards, "but fucking shoplifting... It's like wanking in a public toilet. Just horrible."
Britney Spears
The troubled pop star allegedly snatched a wig off a mannequin in the Los Angeles adult store Hustler in 2007 and left without paying for it. Spears was apparently upset following an altercation with staff in which she stripped off her underwear in the middle of the shop to try on a pair of knickers with 'Barely Legal' stitched on the back. In the following months the singer was also accused of swiping a disposable lighter from a petrol station and walking out of a clothes shop wearing a $200 top.
Lady Isobel Barnett
The shame of prosecution for shoplifting was all too much for Lady Isobel Barnet, a doctor, magistrate and panellist on BBC's What's My Line in the 1950s. At the age of 62, ten years after the death of her husband the Lord Mayor of Leicester, she was fined for stealing a tin of tuna and a carton of cream worth just 87p from her village grocer. The TV star was found dead in her bath four days later and the coroner returned a verdict of suicide. ·
