Hurricane Sandy hits New York - four must-see videos
Explosions, fires, flooding and a man in a horse mask: videos of Hurricane Sandy
HURRICANE SANDY has pounded the north-eastern coast of the US, causing widespread flooding, electrical blackouts, and fires. New York and New Jersey have been declared "major disaster" zones by Barack Obama. Here’s a round-up of the best videos of the havoc caused by Hurricane Sandy:
POWER SURGE EXPLOSIONS
Power stations across New York were lit up by explosions last night as the storm surge hit and water damaged electrical systems. Around 7.5m people have been left without power, including 2m in New York City alone. Utilities say it could be up to a week before power is fully restored.
BREEZY POINT FIRE
More than 50 homes have been destroyed by a fire at Breezy Point, in Queens, New York. The New York fire department said 190 firefighters battled the blaze but were hampered by flood waters surrounding the scene. A FDNY spokesman said it was “a miracle” that there were only two minor injuries.
FLOODS IN MANHATTAN
New Yorkers awoke to a submerged city this morning; water has flooded subways and tunnels leaving public transport at a standstill. A spokeswoman said officials had "no idea how long" it will take to restore service.
TOPLESS MAN IN HORSE MASK
A reporter covering the storm was surprised when a shirtless man wearing a horse mask jogged behind her along a deserted Washington DC street. The stunt left the reporter, who noted the man must be freezing, in hysterics saying: “You can hide in your house, or you can have a sense of humour about it.”
