Redknapp threatens media blackout over Nani row

Row over controversial goal overshadows build-up to Spurs’s clash with Inter Milan

Spurs head into their biggest home game for decades tonight as they face Inter Milan in the Champions League. But Harry Redknapp is still fuming about Nani's controversial goal against them on Saturday and the Spurs boss has threatened a media blackout if he gets punished for calling the goal "a farce".

Redknapp was incensed when referee Mark Clattenburg allowed Manchester United's second goal to stand, even though Spurs goalkeeper Heurelho Gomes assumed he had been awarded a free kick after United midfielder Nani handled the ball.

Clattenburg had waved play on after Nani went down in the box and grabbed the ball as Tottenham had regained possession. Not realising what was going on, a confused Gomes placed the ball for what he thought was a free kick and up popped Nani to take advantage and pass the ball into an unguarded net.

After the game Redknapp's immediate reaction was to say: "The whole thing was a farce. It was handball. Nani put his hand on it and dragged it down. Mark Clattenburg is a top referee but he has had a nightmare with that."

His anger was not abated when he was warned that he could face FA sanctions for his post-match comments.

"Good luck to them if they want to make an issue of what I said, then I'll make some issues as well," said Redknapp. "Don't expect me to come out on the TV any more, ever, and speak to the press after the game, because I won't do it."

In the aftermath of the goal, Redknapp had suggested that referees and linesman colluded with one another to get their stories straight after controversial decisions to cover each other's backs.

Explaining himself Redknapp said: "I never questioned the integrity [of the officials]. What I said is that when they get in their room... they would always make sure that they sing from the same hymn sheet.

"Even though Mr Clattenburg, in private, has said to somebody that I know, for a fact, that he made a mess, really. When the reports go in, all the assistants back up Mark Clattenburg. They all work together."

Redknapp will be hoping that the officials give him an easier time tonight when his side face Inter Milan.

Despite a somewhat lacklustre start to their Serie A campaign, Inter showed their class during the first half of their encounter a fortnight ago, scoring four goals in 35 minutes.

Spurs will be hopeful that Gareth Bale can continue the form that saw him score a hat trick last time around, but in Maicon Inter have a right back who is the best equipped in the world to deal with him.

One thing Redknapp won't have to worry about is the interpretation of refereeing decisions by his goalkeeper Gomes. The Brazilian misses the match because he was sent off against Inter two weeks ago. Carlo Cudicini is set to deputise. ·
