Mark Hughes set to take over at Fulham
Welsh manager ends long wait to find a new home, but will any of his old City players join him?
Fulham's hunt for a new manager appears to have come to an end and the club are set to name Mark Hughes as their new boss – possibly before the weekend. It is widely reported that he has already said yes, and all that remains is for him to be officially unveiled by the club.
It will be a bit of good news for the Cottagers given the embarrassment they suffered after it emerged that the man they had expected to take over, Martin Jol, had been using them to help get himself a better contract at Ajax.
For Mark Hughes, whose career began with the job of coaching his country, Wales, it will be a welcome return to management after his unceremonious sacking by Manchester City last December. Once the golden boy of British football management after achieving great things with Blackburn Rovers, he was even touted as a future manager of Manchester United.
His fall from grace at Eastlands damaged his reputation but Fulham, who reached the Europa League final last year, are a club with ambition and could be the ideal vehicle for him to get his career back on track.
Fulham managers have never had a huge amount of cash to help them, but with owner Mohammed Al-Fayed's recent sale of Harrods, that could be set to change.
Who knows? The recent news that Manchester City's squad needs to be trimmed – it has 12 more players than the maximum 25 set in new Premier League rules – could mean that some of Hughes' old charges at Eastlands could also be making the move down to West London. ·
