Keeper Sebastien Frey ‘on his way’ to Arsenal

Transfer Talk: Mark Schwarzer says he is still a Fulham player, Thierry Henry joins New York Red Bulls

Good goalkeepers are like London buses as far as Arsenal are concerned – you wait ages for one and then two appear at once. On the day Fulham shotstopper Mark Schwarzer admitted to Sky Sports that he would love to join the Gunners, rumours spread from Italy suggesting that Fiorentina keeper Sebastien Frey could soon be on his way to the Emirates.

Though it was reported last week that Aussie Schwarzer was definitely headed Arsenal's way, it appears the more excitable members of the press pack were premature in calling the 37-year-old a Gunner; Schwarzer told Sky Sports that he hasn't even taken a medical examination at Arsenal and for the moment he remains on Fulham's books – though he didn't rule out a move once he's finished his post-World Cup holiday.

Meanwhile, over in Italy Fiorentina are on the verge of  signing Artur Boruc from Glasgow Celtic, which Frey infers is a clear sign he's no longer wanted by the Serie A club. The 30-year-old Frey, who was capped by France before falling out with former coach Raymond Domenech (is there any French player Domenech didn't wind up?), has been linked with a move to Arsenal in the past and now it's looking likely a deal will be done. "In life, at times, you need new challenges and I cannot hide the fact that I need that," said Frey, who's had spells at Inter Milan and Parma. Frey intends to speak to Fiorentina president Diego Della Valle in the near future about his wish to move to Arsenal.

Another Frenchman that Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger would like to see at the club is Paris Saint-German midfielder Stephane Sessegnon. The 26-year-old has impressed for PSG since arriving from Le Mans in 2008, and this in a team that continues to underachieve. Wenger is said to be ready to offer PSG £10m for Sessegnon, capped over 30 times for Benin, but the French club president, Robin Leproux, is equally determined to hold on to the player. In an interview on France radio Leproux said: "I spoke to Stephane before the holidays [about staying at PSG]. He is a great player, he has fantastic qualities and makes fans dream on the field. He is capable of a magic season for us and I told him that. We know we can count on him."

While Arsenal chase a Beninese star, their North London rivals have set their hearts on a Brazilian – World Cup flop Luís Fabiano. The 29-year-old, whose side slumped out of the tournament against Holland in the quarter-final, is currently with Spanish side Sevilla, but Spurs boss Harry Redknapp has admitted he's on the tail of Fabiano. "Yes, I like him," he said in an interview with ESPN Soccernet. "He's a fabulous player and would be a brilliant addition to any team. I am not unhappy with the squad I have, but of course if a special player came along I would look at it, and Fabiano is a special player all right."

Redknapp is keen to strengthen his squad with the preliminary matches of the Champions League on the horizon for Spurs, but he admitted wages might be a problem when it comes to luring Fabiano to White Hart Lane: "For sure, he is a class act, but I don't know what he earns. He might be on mega money, so it might prove to be impossible for us."

Talking of World Cup flops, few come bigger than England's James Milner and France's Thierry Henry, but incredibly it seems there are still managers out there who are willing to pay hard cash to secure their services. Milner's current employer Aston Villa are fighting tooth and nail to keep Milner, despite Manchester City's determination to entice the midfielder to Eastlands. Villa rejected an initial bid of £24m for Milner and the club's manager Martin O'Neill has told Sky Sports he wants to hang on to the Three Lions loser. "Clearly, we've got a better chance of performing in the manner in which we did last season if we keep our best players and James Milner comes into that equation," said O'Neill.

As for Henry, a member of the shambolic French squad who cheated their way to South Africa in the first place before imploding in glorious Gallic style once there, it's been confirmed that he will be playing for the Red Bulls in the USA Major League Soccer. An official announcement will be made on Thursday but the Red Bulls general manager and sporting director Erik Soler has declared: "It's important to deliver what you promise. The Red Bulls promised to build a new stadium. They've done that... we also said we would bring in some star players. We'll bring the first in on Thursday." And that player will be Henry, completing his fall from grace after his decision to turn his back on Arsenal in 2007 ·
