Arsenal watch Mohamed Zidan and Uruguayan teen
Transfer Talk: After Chamakh, Wenger monitors Egyptian hitman and Palermo’s Abel Hernandez
Arsenal already have one striker in the bag in the form of Marouane Chamakh, but could they be adding another North African to their frontline? Egyptian internatioanl Mohamed Zidan, who scored against England last week, claims he is being tracked by Arsenal's scouts and says he wants to "become the first Egyptian to play for the Gunners."
According to the player's father, the striker has a special clause in his contract with Borussia Dortmund that would allow him to leave should several big clubs, including Arsenal, Manchester United and Barcelona, make an offer for him.
Yet another striker in Arsene Wenger's sights is 19-year-old Uruguayan Abel Hernandez, who is currently plying his trade with Palermo in Serie A.
The youngster, who is nicknamed 'The Jewel', has four goals in nine games this season including strikes against Lazio and Inter Milan. He is tall and pacy and could be a long term solution to Arsenal's lack of a big front man - although Nicklas Bendtner have other ideas, if only he could find the net.
As for his other targets, could Wenger be about to turn to the Orient, and we're not talking about Leyton, for inspiration? According to Sky Sports, the Gunners boss has been heaping praise on South Korean stars Park Ji-sung and Lee Chung-yong for what they have achieved in the Premier League, prompting speculation that Wenger is thinking of heading east for some summer spending.
"I know that the Korean players in England are doing very well and of course it excites a little bit your curiosity," said Wenger, referring to Manchester United's midfielder Park and Lee of Bolton, adding: "The Korean players have done one important thing. There are very few Asian players who have made it in Europe and especially the Premier League but the Korean players look to adapt very well."
Wenger has experience of the footballing talent in the Far East. Before he joined Arsenal in 1996 he spent a spell coaching Nagoya Grampus Eight in Japan's J-League, and in 2001 he brought Junichi Inamoto to Highbury for what turned out to be a short-lived stay. Sky says that Wenger intends to "cast his eye" over South Korea and Japan during the World Cup with a view to making one or two signings. "I will look at every single player I can find," he was quoted as saying.
The Sun says that Franck Ribery has dropped his biggest hint that he might yet be on his way to Stamford Bridge. The Frenchman has been unsettled at Bayern Munich this season and rumours have been rife as to where he could be headed at the end of the season as the German club look to cash in on their world-class winger. The £55m-rated star has been linked with Spanish giants Real Madrid and Barcelona but the 26-year-old Ribery has dismissed talk that the deal with Real is already done and dusted. "It's not 100 per cent certain I'll go to Real," he's quoted as saying in the Sun. "Barca are also interested, as are Chelsea. That doesn't mean I will leave Bayern. I will decide in the next two to three weeks."
The Daily Mail reports that Roman Pavlyuchenko is again being targeted by Lokomotiv Moscow. The Spurs' striker, who's netted six goals in his last four games, is apparently "keen to return home" to Russia and the paper quotes Lokomotiv’s president, Nikolay Naumov, as saying: "We have spoken to Roman about this. He still wants to return to Russia and if he does return, he will only come to our team." The 28-year-old Pavlyuchenko almost joined Lokomotiv in January on a £10.5 million deal but he remained at White Hart Lane and has since struck a rich vein of form that has helped Spurs climb to fourth. With the prospect of Champions League football next season a strong possibility, Lokomotiv might find it harder to prise Pavlyuchenko away from the club he joined in 2008.
Finally the Daily Star says that Everton's American striker Landon Donovan is hopeful that LA Galaxy will cede to his request to stay on Merseyside for a further month. Donovan is due to head home on March 15 after his successful loan deal but he’s having such a great time with the Toffees he wants to stay a bit longer. "I have told the Galaxy what I want, they know what's going on and I speak to my manager there fairly often," he said. "Both clubs know how I feel, which is that I would like to stay...I don’t think there are many players in the world who get a chance to play against, and beat, Chelsea and Manchester United in the same week. It's absolutely improved me as a player." ·
