Arsenal target Remy and Melo in £35m swoop
Transfer Talk: Wenger tracks French striker and Brazilian midfielder, but may lose defender Gallas
It's all go at the Gunners right now, if the faithful Fourth Estate is to be believed. The Sun reveals that Arsene Wenger has stepped up the chase for France frontman Loic Remy. The 23-year-old has been impressing this season in the French first division, even though his club Nice are struggling near the foot of the table and Remy's agent - Frederic Guerra - is quoted as saying: "Arsenal are interested in Remy for next season."
Unfairly dubbed the "new Thierry Henry", despite never having cheated by flagrantly handling the ball, Remy is nonetheless a proven goal scorer with a £14m price tag. He's also chums with Arsenal's Abou Diaby and Bacary Sagna, which the Sun believes will help seal the deal with the north London club.
The Daily Mail meanwhile reports that Felipe Melo could be on his way to the Emirates next season from Juventus (as reported in The First Post on Wednesday), but the Italian club will want something in exchange, and we're not talking about Arsenal's comedy reserve goalkeeper Lukasz Fabianski.
No, the Mail says that in exchange for Brazilian midfielder Melo, Juventus would expect to receive one of Robin van Persie, Gael Clichy and Bacary Sagna, as well as cash in a deal worth £21m.
According to the Mail, Wenger and Juventus are open to a deal and the Gunners' boss is becoming ever more interested in the Melo having seen him impress for Brazil in their 2-0 defeat of Ireland at the Emirates on Tuesday night. "We are still looking at Melo," confirmed Wenger, when asked if a deal was on the cards.
The Mail adds that although Juventus are resigned to waving goodbye to Melo they have lined up Miguel Veloso of Sporting Lisbon as a replacement, even though Manchester United have long been linked with the Portugal midfield maestro.
If the Reds do fail to reel in Veloso, the same paper reports that they will try and land Croatia Under 21 star Milan Badelj. Described by the paper as a playmaker, the Dinamo Zagreb star has blossomed since leaving Tottenham two years ago. He's found the back of the net 11 times in 28 appearances this season and is now being linked with a £9m summer switch to Old Trafford. Still only 21, Badelj is also being chased by Inter Milan, Lyon and Bayern Munich but England seems to be his preferred destination.
Finally, yet more news from Arsenal where it's rumoured William Gallas might soon be packing his bags. The Daily Mirror says that Roma boss Claudio Ranieri is keen to be reunited with Gallas at the Italian club next season. The ageing Arsenal defender, 33 in the summer, is becoming increasingly long in the tooth and with his Gunners contract set to expire at the end of the season, the Frenchman might well opt for the more leisurely pace of Serie A. It was Ranieri who brought Gallas to Chelsea from Marseille for £6m in 2001. ·
