Mourinho puts Gerrard top of his shopping list
Transfer Talk: Midfielder could sway Liverpool for Inter Milan; Chelsea close in on David Luiz
Steven Gerrard could be wearing the blue and black of Inter Milan next season, if a report in the Daily Mail is to be believed. According to the paper Inter boss Jose Mourinho has put the England skipper top of his "summer shopping list".
The Special One, as Mourinho likes to call himself, has been an admirer of Gerrard's since his days managing Chelsea and reportedly put in a bid at the time for the Liverpool legend. Though he failed on that occasion, Mourinho is quietly confident that with Liverpool struggling this season, the Merseyside club might be willing to sell Gerrard to raise some much needed cash.
The Mail says that the Portuguese preener will tell Inter president Massimo Moratti to make Gerrard "a priority" when the Italian club embark on a summer spending spree. Though Gerrard has in the past resisted the overtures of the big continental clubs, he might be more tempted if Liverpool fail to qualify for the Champions League. The 29-year-old is not getting any younger, as he showed last night for England when he put in a half-hearted performance that might perhaps make Mourinho think twice.
The Mirror is convinced that Benfica's Brazilian defender David Luiz will be at Stamford Bridge next season. Apparently Chelsea boss Carlo Ancelotti is tracking the 22-year-old centre-half, who comes with a £10m price tag, and is bullish that he can secure Luiz's services ahead of Manchester United and Real Madrid.
With Chelsea skipper John Terry beginning to look his age, Ancelotti wants to introduce some youth into the Chelsea back four and he sees Luiz as the ideal man. The brilliant Brazilian is tied to Benfica until 2015 but as everyone knows a contract in the modern football world is as meaningful as John Terry's wedding vows.
Chelsea are also reported to be "keeping tabs" on AZ Alkmaar striker Moussa Dembele. Described as "unsettled" at the Dutch outfit – in other words, looking for a more lucrative contract – the 23-year-old Belgian international has been linked with the Blues recently, along with Juventus, Genoa and AC Milan. Now apparently Ajax and Chelsea have joined the hunt, though Dembele's agent, Patrick Vervoort, categorically denied the former when interviewed on RTV Noord-Holland. "I can assure you that there hasn't been any contact with Ajax. It's very unlikely that Moussa will join another Eredivisie side."
Finally, the Mail says that Habib Beye wants to leave Aston Villa just seven months after he arrived in the Midlands. The Senegal defender joined Villa on a £2.5million deal from Newcastle in the summer but, after making just a handful of Premier League appearances, he feels his career would be best served by a fresh start elsewhere. Sunderland tried to take Beye back to Tyneside in the January transfer window and the Mail says it's likely they'll get their man before too long. ·
