Bergkamp points Gunners towards Christian Eriksen
Transfer Talk: Ajax wonderkid and Ingolfur Sigurdsson could both end up at Emirates
You can take the Gunner out of Arsenal but you can't take the Arsenal out of the Gunner. In a week where Gilberto Silva reminisced fondly over his time in North London, declaring "To be honest, I miss everything about Arsenal", comes news that another great Gunner hasn't forgotten his old club.
According to the Mirror, Dennis Bergkamp has given a "glowing report" to Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger about 18-year-old Ajax wonderkid Christian Eriksen (above), advising him to snap up the teenage midfielder. Bergkamp began his career with the once great Ajax before ending up enjoying 11 glorious years and over 550 glorious games with Arsenal. And though the Dutch master now resides in the Netherlands, his heart clearly retains an N5 postal address.
Eriksen is on the verge of breaking into the Ajax first team but has only one year to run on his existing contract, and Bergkamp has told Wenger he should be "keeping tabs" on the young Dane, who began his career at Odense. Ajax boss Martin Jol is quoted in the Mirror as saying: "We are eager to offer him a new contract in the upcoming weeks. We want Christian to stay in Amsterdam for several more years. It all depends on what the player himself wants though."
Or what Bergkamp wants. There's no doubt that a word in Eriksen's ear, from one of the world's greatest ever footballers, that perhaps he'd better off at the Emirates, would seal the deal as far as Arsenal are concerned.
There's another young prodigy on Arsenal's books, according to the Daily Mail - and, if the news is true, expect more tea cup-throwing from Alex Ferguson.
The paper reports that "Manchester United target" Ingolfur Sigurdsson has just finished a week-long trial at the Emirates and Arsene Wenger was "impressed" with what he saw of the 17-year-old Icelandic winger. Sigurdsson, described as "technically-gifted", scored for the Gunners in a youth match last weekend and has now returned to KR Reykjavik, with reports suggesting he enjoyed his time in London so much he now prefers a move to the Emirates rather than Old Trafford.
In other news the Mail reports that Hull City defender Kamil Zayatte was on the verge of quitting the club during last month's transfer window and still harbours hope that he will leave Humberside before too long. The Guinea international says that Tottenham and West Ham both came calling in January but were deterred by Hull's asking price.
"I almost left Hull during the last transfer window," says the 24-year-old Zayatte, who has also played for French league 1 club Lens. "But I won't give up. If all goes well I see myself at a bigger club than Hull. If I could land a move to Manchester United, Arsenal or Chelsea it would make all Guineans proud of me."
The Mirror meanwhile says that Barcelona midfielder Yaya Toure has ruled out a move to the Premier League. Toure, 26, younger brother of the Manchester City captain, Kolo, claims to have been on the receiving end of interest from Manchester City and Arsenal but says: "My future is at Barcelona... I have spoken to the directors at the club, I don't want to leave and my only mission is to stay and be a success at the club."
More to the point, would either City or Arsenal be interested in a player from a club like Barcelona, who have shown themselves in recent weeks - with their scandalous approaches to Arsenal skipper Cesc Fabregas – to be a club without honour? ·
