Real Madrid ‘determined to get Arsene Wenger’
Transfer Talk: Gunners boss has been in Real’s sights before - could he be tempted this time?
Arsenal have moved a step closer to declaring war on Spain after yet another act of unprovoked aggression from one of their football clubs. For the past few months the Gunners have been under attack from Barcelona, enduring constant sniping from the cowardly Catalans that Arsenal skipper Cesc Fabregas would be on their books come the summer. Now a second front has opened up, with Real Madrid determined to capture Arsene Wenger and bring him to the Spanish capital.
According to the Daily Mail, Wenger is on Madrid's "radar" and was the first choice of Real president Florentino Perez last summer. Though the job went to current coach Manuel Pellegrini, his position has come under pressure recently with a run of poor results, including last week's 1-0 defeat to Lyon in the Champions League. The paper says Wenger listened seriously to Real's offer back then before remaining loyal to Arsenal but he is being "touted once again" in Real quarters and might find a second approach more tempting.
The biggest news from the Sunday papers concerned Manchester City and their decision to go after Steven Gerrard and Fernando Torres this summer.
After failing to lure Kaka to Eastlands last year City have decided to spend that £100m they have lying about, plus a bit more, on the Liverpool duo. Apparently they believe £140m would secure the pair, but City would need to qualify for the Champions League first.
City fans might not be that excited by the prospect after watching both Gerrard and Torres in the dismal 0-0 draw between the two clubs on Sunday.
Angel di Maria's future is also under scrutiny with Portuguese newspaper A Bola linking him to almost every major club in Europe.
The Benfica winger has consistently been linked to Chelsea and now it is reported that both Manchester clubs plus Real Madrid and Barcelona are after his signature.
Could Thierry Henry be about to quit Barcelona? The Mirror claims that the cheating Frenchman will put on the transfer list this summer with Manchester City "likely" to lead the chase for the shamed star's signature. The 32-year has scored just twice this season in 13 appearances and has resigned himself to the fact that his face doesn't fit with coach Pep Guardiola, even though his contract runs until 2011.
Henry joined Barcelona from the Gunners in 2007. Despite winning the La Liga title and the Champions League, his reputation has nose-dived since his injudicious decision to leave Arsenal, the club that made him a respected footballer and human being.
Unlike their Manchester rivals, United prefer to focus their attention on wonderkids rather than has-beens, and are "head of the queue" for QPR sensation Raheem Sterling. The Mirror says that the Reds' youth boss, Brian McClair, attended Sterling's U18 game at the weekend to make "a final check" on the 15-year-old midfielder.
In recent weeks Sterling has been linked with a succession of big name clubs, including Arsenal, and also some smaller name clubs, including Fulham and Tottenham, but now United have nipped in. The Mirror says United and QPR will soon sit down and "thrash out a proper fee" for the Jamaican-born Sterling, whom Alex Ferguson believes will be a "household name" in a few years time.
Finally Liverpool veteran Jamie Carragher has confessed he might soon be on his way out of Merseyside. Speaking to the local media, the 32-year-old defender said he was still enjoying life at Anfield but "I have no choice but to think about the possibilities beyond that." Carragher has made over 600 appearances for the club since 1996, but admitted: "I'm interested in how other clubs operate. There's more to football than The Liverpool Way and I'd like to hear different ideas". ·
