Arsene Wenger admits it might not be possible to hang on to Mikael Silvestre and William Gallas at the end of the season. The Gunners' boss is quoted in the Daily Mirror as saying: "I have a meeting with Silvestre in March. We have a common agreement to meet in March and see where we go from there."

Wenger says the 32-year-old Silvestre, who arrived at the Emirates Stadium from Manchester United in August 2008, is a "remarkable influence in the squad" but that the centre-half is currently behind Thomas Vermaelen in the Gunners' pecking order. "Will he [Silvestre] be completely happy if he does not get the games? I am not sure," said Wenger.

As for Gallas, the Arsenal boss told the Mirror: "The talk with Gallas has to be a bit earlier because he plays regularly. But we need some experience in the dressing room."

Meanwhile one of Wenger's former protegees, Tony Adams, may be on his way to France, according to a report in the Daily Mail. The paper says that French first division club, Saint Etienne, who fired coach Alain Perrin this week, are in talks with the Arsenal legend and former short-term Portsmouth boss with a view to bringing him to the club.

St Etienne's sporting director is 37-year-old Damien Comolli, a man Adams knows well from his Arsenal days. Comolli spent seven seasons at the Gunners from 1996 to 2003 and is credited with unearthing players such as Gael Clichy and Kolo Toure.

Perhaps we will learn more from the Today programme this Christmas: Adams is one of six guests editors chosen by the BBC to edit the Radio 4 current affairs programme one morning between Christmas and New Year.

The Daily Mirror says that Manchester United are targeting the young Serbian central defender Uros Cosic - "seen by his club CSKA Moscow as potentially a bigger talent than Nemanja Vidic." According to the paper, the 17-year-old could be a United player within the next few months, despite CSKA's wish to hang on to the teenage sensation.

The Mirror claims Cosic is so highly regarded that CSKA has enlisted the help of Kremlin president Dmitry Medvedev in a bid to get him Russian citizenship. "I must stress that we would like to keep Cosic", Yevgeni Giner, CSKA's president, is quoted as saying. "We even offered him Russian citizenship. It now depends upon the President Medvedev whether it is granted or not."

Cosic added: "I have not seen such a great central defender before... but Manchester United would also love to have him. They have already made several attempts to approach me about him, asking if I was ready to negotiate."

Could Carlos Cuellar be on his way from Villa Park to Real Madrid? The Spanish defender's scintillating form this season for Aston Villa is not only likely to earn the 28-year-old a place in his country's World Cup squad but could secure him a lucrative move to Madrid.

Cuellar, who arrived at Villa from Rangers in the summer of 2008, has been an integral part of Villa's superb form this season and the Mirror says he has won admirers at Real who are looking for a new defender following an injury to Pepe. ·
