Ancelotti unimpressed by below-par Chelsea
Essien injured as Cypriot minnows hold Blues to a draw at Stamford Bridge
Chelsea 2 Apoel Nicosia 2. Could Chelsea, who seemed almost invincible last month, be starting to wobble? The Blues rounded off their successful Champions League group stage campaign with an unimpressive 2-2 draw with Apoel Nicosia of Cyprus.
Since their emphatic defeat of Arsenal 10 days ago, Carlo Ancelotti's men have not won a game. They were dumped out of the League Cup by Blackburn, beaten 2-1 in the league by Manchester City, and have now seen their 12-game winning streak at Stamford Bridge ended by a team of minnows who were expected to the group whipping boys.
After the game Chelsea's Italian manager was clearly angry. "We lost concentration, had no intensity and played too slowly, too soft. We have to play for 90 minutes with intensity and concentration... This was not how we want it. I spoke with my players about it afterwards," said Ancelotti.
His mood would not have been improved by an injury to Michael Essien who limped off with a hamstring injury after scoring Chelsea's equaliser midway through the first half.
Nicosia had taken a shock lead after just six minutes when Marcin Zewlakow beat Ross Turnbull as the Chelsea defence appealed for offside. Essien was on hand to restore parity after 19 minutes when he fired home from Florent Malouda's pass.
Seven minutes later the home side were in front when Didier Drogba converted a cross from Yuri Zhirkov - one of the fringe players given a run out. Youngster Gael Kakuta was also involved in the move, and he was one of the stand-out performers for the home side.
The second half was a low-key affair until three minutes from time when Apoel equalised through Nenad Mirosavljevic after Jon Obi Mikel had given the ball away in sloppy fashion. ·
