Transfer Talk: Defender has been training with the Gunners, who are interested in Spurs striker

Sol Campbell is the man to solve Manchester United's defensive injury crisis, according to reports in today's Sun and Mirror. Both newspapers say that the 35-year-old centre-half has reached a release agreement with Notts County, the League Two club he joined in the summer on a five-year deal worth £10m.

Campbell lasted just a few weeks at County before quitting, and since then the former Arsenal and England star has been training with the Gunners to keep in shape. "United are investigating how quickly they can sign Campbell," reports the Sun, "and the signs are he will be fit for his debut for the champions in the New Year."

Alex Ferguson has been forced to look for emergency cover after a devastating run of injuries to his squad. Patrice Evra was the only first-choice defender fit to face Wolfsburg in last night's 3-1 Champions League victory, with Darren Fletcher and Michael Carrick standing in as defensive cover.

The Mirror says that United will invite Campbell to train at Old Trafford in the coming weeks, in order to assess his fitness, with Ferguson likely to "offer Campbell a six-month contract until the end of the season".

So bad is Arsenal's injury crisis that the club is considering a move for out-of-favour Spurs striker Roman Pavlyuchenko - according to the player's agent.

Quite what the Emirates faithful would make of a 'Tottenham reject' who can't get a game for Harry Redknapp leading the line remains to be seen.

The Russian striker has fallen behind Jermain Defoe, Peter Crouch and Robbie Keane in the pecking order at White Hart Lane and Pavlyuchenko's agent, Oleg Artemov, is adamant that the player will leave Spurs in January. He claims Roma, Spartak Moscow, Zenit St Petersburg and Arsenal are all interested.

One thing sceptical Gunners fans might want to bear in mind is the successful partnership the striker formed with his team-mate Andrei Arshavin in the Russian national team.

Manchester City are definitely in the hunt for a full back, or so it seems. After being linked with Philipp Lahm of Bayern Munich the Sun claims they are now looking at AC Milan's promising youngster Ignazio Abate. The 23-year-old former Under-21 international is being tipped to make the Italian World Cup squad.

Sky Sports reports that "Sevilla manager Manolo Jimenez has played down reports linking Diego Perotti with a move to Arsenal." The 21-year-old midfielder has been in sparkling form this season for the Spanish club and the Gunners are said to have their eye on the Argentine international, but his displays have also attracted the interest of Real Madrid

"It's not worrying, the player is training as normal and he is only thinking of Sevilla at the moment," said Jimenez of the player who joined Sevilla in 2007. "That said, what will be, will be. You can't control these external factors."

Perotti will be able to prove his worth tonight as Sevilla play Glasgow Rangers in the Champions League with the Spanish club having already qualified for the knockout phase of the competition.

David Beckham's Los Angeles Galaxy teammate and sparring partner Landon Donovan may be about to join Everton on loan, says the Guardian. The 27-year-old USA forward famously criticised Beckham in a book earlier this year, saying the England legend treated his time in America as "a joke" and showed no "dedication or commitment to this team [LA Galaxy]".

Since then the pair have made up and they may face each other in next year's World Cup after last Friday's draw paired England and the USA in Group C, alongside Algeria and Slovenia.

According to the Guardian "a loan deal for Donovan would also suit David Moyes [Everton's manager] in January. The Everton manager is unlikely to have money available for permanent signings and needs to bolster a squad depleted by several long-term injuries". ·
