Theo Walcott

Transfer Talk: Wenger struggles to maintain the cream of Arsenal’s talent

WILL the last player to leave the Emirates please turn out the lights! That might soon be the message to the Gunners squad after the revelation that winger Theo Walcott is the target of Italian giants Juventus.

The news comes 24 hours after Robin van Persie admitted he was stalling over signing on for another term at Arsenal, with the Mail claiming Manchester City were planning a £30m bid for the Dutch striker in the New Year.

With Cesc Fabregas, Gael Clichy and Samir Nasri having departed during the summer, Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger is struggling to retain the cream of his talent.

Juventus coach Antonio Conte has said that he has his eyes on three Premier League players: 22-year-old Walcott, Manchester United winger Nani and Manchester City's unhappy Argentine Carlos Tevez.

Like Arsene Wenger, Conte is feeling the heat after a poor start to the season and he confessed to reporters that the club needs fresh blood if they're to challenge for Serie A honours this year.

Then he dropped his bombshell concerning England star Walcott. "We could not get Walcott, Nani or Tevez [in the summer] because of the finances involved," he told reporters. But "if we can work something out with our budget, then maybe there is a possibility".

At least the Mail has some news that might cheer Gunners fans as they contemplate the fragmentation of their squad. Apparently the club is in negotiations with Valencia to sign midfielder Daniel Parejo. The 22-year-old came through the Real Madrid academy and was on the books of QPR during his teenage years before linking up with Spanish outfit Valencia.

The Mail says that Parejo – a star for the victorious Spain Under-21 squad at last summer's European Championships - isn't happy, however, and speculates that a £7m offer might be made for the youngster by Arsenal in January's transfer window. The paper even goes so far as to claim that Arsenal sent some their people to Spain last week to discuss terms with Parejo's agent.

At the other end of the age spectrum Sol Campbell continues to look for gainful employment. According to the Metro, the former Spurs and Arsenal central defender, now aged 37, has told his agent to put out the feelers in the hope that some club might be willing to take a punt on the ageing giant.

Campbell was released by Newcastle in May after just one season on Tyneside and the Metro says the ex-England star believes he still has something to offer top-flight football – and we're not talking about stiff joints and grey hairs.

Tottenham are apparently on Campbell's radar but, as the Metro asks, would the Lilywhites seriously consider hiring a player who walked out on them for Arsenal 10 years ago? Swansea City are reported to have made enquiries but were deterred by "the defender's wage demands". ·
