Harry Redknapp’s surprise package takes on Man Utd
Team news and more for the weekend’s Premier League fixtures
After the distraction of watching England qualify for the World Cup on Wednesday it's back to the grind of the Premier League for football fans. This weekend's matches see the top six teams all playing each other, and the two basement dwellers going head to head.
The big game on Saturday sees Harry Redknapp's unbeaten Spurs outfit, the surprise package of the season so far, take on Manchester United at White Hart Lane. The Londoners are flying high after four straight wins, and Harry Redknapp appears to have the knack of getting the best out of his players - witness Aaron Lennon's man of the match display against Croatia on Wednesday.
After their shock defeat to Burnley earlier this season United bounced back with a win over Arsenal and Sir Alex Ferguson will be anxious to avoid losing any more ground in the title race.
Earlier in the day sixth-placed Arsenal play Manchester City, lying in fourth spot. Like Chelsea and Spurs, City have a 100 per cent record this season but have only played three games. Striker Emmanuel Adebayor, who has found the net three times this season already, will be hoping to get one over on his old employers, while Arsenal, who started the season so brightly, will be looking for a return to winning ways after their loss at Old Trafford.
League leaders Chelsea, who, like Spurs, have a 100 per cent record so far this season, face a tricky away trip to Stoke, who have gatecrashed the top five with seven points from their opening four games. Although they have steamrollered all their opponents so far this term, the Blues will be given a stern test at Stoke, who turned the Britannia Stadium into a fortress last season.
Elsewhere, misfiring Liverpool take on giant-killers Burnley, hoping that the international break will have done them some good. At the bottom, pointless Portsmouth and Bolton go head to head at Fratton Park, with the loser left contemplating a long hard winter fighting relegation. ·
