Arsenal & West Ham fight over Chamakh; Man City want Bentley
Transfer Talk: The Moroccan striker has a choice of London clubs, while Mark Hughes offers the England winger a lifeline out of White Hart Lane
It's 'make your mind up time' today for Bordeaux striker Marouane Chamakh, as he mulls over bids from Arsenal and West Ham. The 25-year-old striker is valued by his club at £10m, a figure which is twice what Arsene Wenger wants to spend the bring the Moroccan to the Emirates. The way would thus seem to be clear for West Ham to swoop for the highly rated forward, the Daily Mail claims, but both London clubs will be aware that at the end of this season Chamakh, who has netted 15 times for his country, will become a free agent and thus would cost them nothing in transfer fees...
Sunderland boss Steve Bruce has sealed his seventh signing of the summer, picking up in-demand defender Michael Turner from Hull. The 25-year-old will move up the east coast for £6.5m, and may not be the last bit of deadline day business at the Stadium of Light, as Bruce has nine players that he is looking to offload to balance the books, including Nyron Nosworthy, a Portsmouth target, Stoke-fancied Danny Collins and David Healy, whose Coventry move could be derailed by the Northern Ireland international demanding a full contract with the Midlanders...
Tottenham boss Harry Redknapp has been stymied by the Spurs board in his attempts to bring his former charge David James to White Hart Lane from Portsmouth, the Guardian reveals. James, the England No 1 keeper, is the latest player to plot an escape from the chaos at Fratton Park, but Redknapp was told by Daniel Levy that the board felt in Heurelho Gomes and Carlo Cudicini the north Londoners had enough options at the back. With Sunderland also reportedly backing out of a move for the 39-year-old James, it looks like he may have to focus on making the England squad for the 2010 World Cup from the south coasters who are widely tipped for relegation...
James aside, it looks like much of today's transfer deadline activity will focus of ins and outs at White Hart Lane, as the Times reports that the legendary wheeler dealer Redknapp is planning a move for Pompey's midfielder Nico Kranjcar. The Croat has impressed for Portsmouth despite their 100 per cent losing start to the season, and would provide cover for his countryman Luka Modric at Spurs following the latter's broken leg during the 2-1 home win over Birmingham at the weekend. Kranjcar would hook up with fellow Fratton Park refugees Peter Crouch and Jermain Defoe at Spurs...
Meanwhile, David Bentley, the forgotten man of White Hart Lane, is on the verge of a remarkable deadline day move to Mark Hughes' Manchester City. The moneybags Mancunians will end the England international's unhappy time at Spurs by swapping him for Bulgarian midfielder Martin Petrov on a long-term loan, the Daily Mail reports, that will see Bentley hook up with Hughes, one of the few managers to have got the most out of the winger. Bentley moved to Tottenham for £15m from Blackburn just over a year ago, but since then has seen little go right for him, down to last week's conviction of drink-driving charges... ·
