City may miss Eto’o, target Sanchez

Manchester City, who appear to have been snubbed by Barcelona's Samuel Eto'o, is chasing Spanish under-21 defender Sergio Sanchez, claims the Daily Mail. Sanchez has turned a few heads at the European Championships that have just finished in Sweden, and is currently first-choice right back at Espanyol, curiously filling the place of Pablo Zabaleta, who joined the Citizens last summer. Sanchez would cost the Eastlands club at least £5.1m, the value of the release clause on his contract, although he is also being chased by Sevilla and Valencia...

Chelsea has finally got their man, the Guardian reveals, with Russian Yuri Zhirkov expected to fly in to London tomorrow to sign for Chelsea. The CSKA Moscow midfielder was recommended to the club's owner, Roman Abramovich, by his previous interim manager Guus Hiddink, but will instead end up as Carlo Ancelotti's first signing for the Blues. Zhirkov, who plays on the left of the pitch and so will challenge Joe Cole for that berth, will cost the Stamford Bridgers £18m and can also operate as a left back...

Premier League newboys Wolves have shattered their transfer record to bring Irish striker Kevin Doyle to the Midlands club from Reading for £6.5m, the Sun reports. The 26-year-old notched up 55 goals in 154 league starts for the Royals and played in the Premier League during their two-year stint between 2006 and 2008. He joins Serb midfielder Nenad Milijas and fellow ex-Reading-ite goalkeeper Marcus Hahnemann at the Molineux...

Aston Villa could bring in Middlesbrough's versatile playmaker Tuncay Sanli for just £5m, according to the Daily Mirror. The 'talented Turk' has been made available to other clubs for such a knockdown price as relegated Boro are desparate to get Tuncay's £65,000 a week salary off their books. Tuncay would give Villa boss Martin O'Neill more options in the centre of the park, especially following the departure of Gareth Barry to Manchester City earlier this year... ·
