Humphrys shocked at Fergie outburst
Today programme presenter John Humphrys was taken aback by Sir Alex Ferguson’s undiplomatic handling of a sports reporter
Football reporters have long been aware of the perils of interviewing Sir Alex Ferguson, but when the notoriously irascible Manchester United manager shouted down one hapless journalist after losing the Champions League final against Barcelona on Wednesday night, he may have inadvertently bitten off more than he usually chews.
Asked if he had lost his desire as a manager, he replied: "I don't understand that question, on a night like this. Jesus Christ!"
Giving the assembled press a terrifying glimpse of what his players call the 'hairdryer' treatment, he then rounded on the reporter: "How long have you known me?" Without waiting for an answer he continued: "Why ask that question. Stupid bloody question."
‘You would have thought he could be civil at least’When the recording was aired on Radio 4's Today programme this morning, it caught the ear of Auntie Beeb's arch-bulldog John Humphrys, and he was not impressed. The veteran interviewer could be heard spluttering in the background, before wondering out loud: "Why do they put up with it?"
Warming to his theme, Humphrys continued: "He has certain responsibilities. You would have thought he could be civil at least."
After it was pointed out by a Today colleague that Ferguson is not a politician, Humphrys grudgingly conceded: "I suppose so."
The exchange conjures up the intriguing prospect of a veritable clash of the titans were Humphrys ever to interrogate Ferguson. But it is unlikely to happen. The Manchester United boss has vowed never to speak to the BBC after he took offence to a 2004 documentary that made claims about his son Jason, a football agent. ·

Fact Ferguson has shown his arrogance and has talked down to many others before this day why the surprise? He is a cranky old man particularly when he does not get what he wants most.
Humphrys has never done anything useful in his miserable life. Alex Ferguson on the other hand has done more for the game of football than any man alive.
Pity he didn't give the idiot reporter a smack in the head.
Oh do me a favour! This reporter deserved everything he got - it was a stupid question timed to get exactly the kind of response given. Fergie's only mistake was letting the idiot get away with it. Grow up Humphrys - you have been even ruder in your time!
When Fergie is wound up its genuine (and often quite amusing). When John Humphries is wound up its just pompous.
I would support Sir Alex response, who on earth do these reporters think they are asking stupid questions ??
Man City supporter I may be but on this occasion Sir Alex was dead right.
