Chelsea manager Guus Hiddink may have ruled his side out of the title race but Chelsea are still lurking within striking distance of Liverpool and Man Utd after a narrow 1-0 win over West Ham, which came courtesy of a second half strike from Salomon Kalou and a penalty save from Petr Cech.

As if to underline his comments about the league being out of reach Hiddink dropped several big names including Didier Drogba and Michaels Essien and Ballack for the trip to Upton Park, but the visitors still had the better of the game.

They went ahead after 55 minutes when Kalou fired home after good work from Lampard. But the goalscorer turned villain when he dragged down Herita Ilunga in the box. But Petr Cech produced a morale boosting save to deny Mark Noble from the spot and earn the Blues the 'District Line derby' honours.

There was something to cheer for Hammers fans though - Gianfranco Zola signed a new four year contract after the game, which will keep him at Upton Park until 2013. Assistant Steve Clarke is expected to follow suit.

West Brom look destined for the drop but they produced a fine performance against Sunderland that may drag the Wearsiders down with them. Jonas Olsson swept home the opener from Jonathan Greening's corner and Chris Brunt got a second in the second half. Juan Carlos Menseguez rounded off the win two minutes from time to compound the visitor's misery.

FA Cup finalists Everton slipped up at home as Manchester City secured a rare away win thanks to goals from Robinho and Stephen Ireland. Ryan Gosling notched an Everton goal in stoppage time but that was scant consolation for David Moyes, whose side were well below par.

And there was more bad news for the Toffees after it was confirmed that Phil Jagielka had ruptured a cruciate ligament and will miss the rest of the season.

Villa would have been been relieved to see Everton slip up as they could only manage a draw at Bolton, but maintained their grip on fifth place in the table.

Ashley Young opened the scoring late in the first half when his cross eluded everyone and found its way into the net but Tamir Cohen equalised for Bolton in the second half with a fine 10-yard volley from Andy O'Brien's knockdown.

The result inches Bolton towards safety and leaves Villa without a win in 12 games.

Fulham gave Stoke a wake-up call at Craven Cottage. Stoke's form had been among the best in the league before this game, but the 1-0 defeat thanks to a first half goal from Erik Nevland means that they are not yet out of the woods - while Fulham have not given up on Europe.

Fulham gave Stoke a wake-up call at Craven Cottage and kept their European dreams alive with a 1-0 win thanks to Erik Nevland's first half goal. Stoke were one of the Premier League's form teams before the match, but the defeat will remind them that they are not yet assured of top flight football next season. ·
